After experimenting with different roles in the professional beauty industry, Melanie opened the Melanie Rae Salon in Billings, Montana.  She is crazy about color design, but continues to focus more and more on high-tech hair replacement for both men and women.  In addition to salon owner and full-time stylist, Melanie is a hard-working L’ANZA Educator, who has traveled the United States and Canada sharing the L’ANZA story with everyone she meets.

A force within her community, Melanie volunteers with Look Good….Feel Better, a program sponsored by the American Cancer Society.  Created for women struggling with cancer, the program organizes workshops by licensed cosmetologists to provide instruction on hair and skin care, including wig styling.  “These people are need – I’ll do anything I can.”

Business-Building Tip

Maintaining existing clients is easier and less expensive than finding new ones, so here a few suggestions to keep your clients coming back!

*Always treat your existing clients as if it was their first time.

*Offer them a L’ANZA Healing Treatment.  It could be with Trauma treatment or Moi Moi Hair Masque with scalp massage, or an Ultimate Treatment before a color service.

*Choose 5 clients per week to treat, and track this complimentary service in their file. Performing the service will also allow time to suggest a take-home L’ANZA regimen!

*And don’t forget to put a price or value to your complimentary service. Your clients need to know the cost for their “free” service.  They will appreciate you!

*Always remember to thank them for their business!  Your clients can go to any stylist, and they came to you – say ‘thank you’!

I have a lot of Latina clients that generally like their hair to stay straight and smooth for at least a few days before they shampoo again.  Healing Smooth products are perfect for the Southeastern region where we live, and the Caribbean where many of my clients hail from!

Here is a regimen I find works well for Afro-Caribbean hair types.

At the Backbar:  Begin with Healing Strength Manuka Honey Shampoo to replenish protein.  Then do another shampoo with the Healing Smooth Glossifying Shampoo, and follow with Glossifying Conditioner. 

Blow-dry Prep:  To style, comb a cocktail of Smoother Straightening Balm and Neem Plant Silk Serum through damp hair.  Make sure to work the product evenly from root to end, making curly hair even and smooth, and not heavily weighed down by product.

Blow-dry:  Take thin sections and blow dry with a round brush.  As you blow-dry, mist each  section with Thermal Defense Heat Styler on the root area, and then spray Healing Style Shine F/X on the ends for added shine.  Follow this the whole way through the blow-dry.

Style & Finish:  With hair completely dry, apply Neem Plant Silk Serum on the ends, and continue to section and smooth out hair with a flat iron. 

*If your client wants to keep it curly, but wants to soften and smooth, modify your Blow-dry Prep cocktail to include Smoother Straightening Balm and Design Cream!

Ingredients For Success:

• Healing Smooth Thermal Defense Heat Styler
• Healing Style Design F/X
• 12 bobby pins
• Your Creativity

This style requires no teasing, and we’re only using about 2 pins per curl placement!

 Step 1:  Spay Thermal Defense Heat Styler and blow-dry hair.

Step 2:  Divide hair into the L’ANZA  Zones 1, 2, and 3, and put in ponytails. 

Step 3:  Starting in Zone 2, subsection the hair within the ponytail.  Spray Thermal Defense on each section, and begin going over the sections with a flat iron.  Note:  Always spray first, then flat iron.  Hair will become slightly rigid, yet still smooth and moveable.

Step 4:  After you’ve used your flat iron, spray with Design F/X for light hold, and additional shine.  Twist and shape each section into place, and pin.  Hair will be very moldable, yet calm and controlled.  Repeat in Zone 1, and lastly in Zone 3.

And VOILA – you have a classic, elegant upstyle – simple chic!

Living in Wisconsin, I have many guests who flock to sunny Florida to escape our harsh winter. One client in particular asked me what products she should stock up on before her trip. 

 Humid weather was her main concern and her hair is a little frizzy and wavy. I sent her to Florida with the entire Healing Smooth line.  Glossifying Shampoo, Glossifying Conditioner, Thermal Defense Heat Styler, and my personal favorite, the Smoother Straightening Balm. 

Here’s the regimen I prescribed: 

• Wash hair with Glossifying Shampoo, and condition with the Glossifying Conditioner. 

• After removing excess moisture from the hair, take a dime-size amount of Smoother Straightening Balm and work it in to the hands.  Then run it through the hair.

• Spray a few shots of Thermal Defense Heat Styler before blow-drying to give it a nice, flexible hold that won’t quit and additional thermal protection.  Thermal Defense can also double as a finishing spray!

When my client returned from Florida, I was SHOCKED!  (In a GOOD way!) Her hair not only looked fabulous, but the products I recommended actually repaired her damaged ends – no joke! Her hair was so unbelievably healthy and shiny, and her color still looked great.  My client’s hair was truly Healed, Sealed, and Protected.  Humidity stands no chance against the power of L’ANZA’s Healing Smooth Collection. Over 3000 years old and not looking a day past "just-picked".

Vice President of Education & Brand Development Lawrence Salazar shares his firsthand account of the true power of flowers!  

On my recent trip to Cologne, Germany, I had the opportunity to visit the Roman-Germanic Museum where they were hosting a special exhibit on the Gardens of Egypt.  

One of the exhibit’s eye-catching highlights was a series of flower garlands found in the tombs of Egyptian mummies.  These garlands date back to about 1000 B.C., and are adorned with dried Cornflowers.  To my surprise, the flowers remained the same beautiful, vivid blue.  It looked like they were picked yesterday… not 3000 years ago!   

It makes me proud to know that L’ANZA’s Flower Shield Complex contains extracts from Cornflower.  If the phyto-compounds can protect flowers’ color for all those years, no wonder we keep haircolor looking so vibrant!

Favorite Shampoo:  Healing Strength White Tea Shampoo.  Use it with the Manuka Honey Conditioner when you need that protein.  It really gives hair back its strength and I love the smell – like I just got a treatment!

Favorite Styler:  Taffy.  For curly/scrunching when wet, and to define when dry – love the texture it gives.  Dramatic F/X is great as both a working and a finishing spray. 

Top Product Recommended:  Powder Up Texturizer.  Texas – big hair – Powder Up is a no-brainer.

Favorite Inspiration Source:  I love Instyle.  It’s definitely more focused on clothing and accessories, but the hairstyles are always so wearable and functional.  My clients don’t ask for crazy.  They want what looks good with their wardrobe, and they put together fabulous, fully-defined looks. 

Favorite Look/Era:  The bob.  Classic – can wear it from 5-105.  1920s – genius era.

Specialties:  I’d definitely say COLOR and period hair.  I love the problem-solving involved with color challenges, and with all my theatre background – wig design and formal styling are my obsessions.
